      Regenerative farmers and purple cats

Welcome to The Purple Cat Farm! We are Charles and MJ. We’ve been married 33 years, lived in 8 States and 3 foreign countries on three continents. The Air Force was good to us. Now we live in the middle of the middle of Missouri on 20 acres and we’ve begun a new adventure, although one we have dreamed of since we began dating.

A big part of the reason we chose this life was the tremendous health benefits of grass-finished meats and pastured eggs.  As a perk, they were also much tastier than conventionally raised meats.  This inspired us to raise our animals and as much of our own vegetables and fruit as we could.

Why “The Purple Cat”, you ask?  When Charles was deployed to Afghanistan we were stationed in Minot, North Dakota.  To keep busy, many of the spouses started taking fun classes in town.  The first class was watercolors, and I painted a purple cat.  It was more Dr. Seuss than da Vinci, but it made me laugh.  The next week we did melted-glass art and I did a purple cat.  It was dreadful but the trend was set.  Every purple cat brought Charles that much closer to home.  And after a purple cat ceramic bank, a purple cat mosaic and a purple plaid potholder that in no way resembled a cat, among many other faintly artistic disasters, he came home safe and sound.

So, come along with us, Miss Sadie Hawkins (our giant dog of doom), the sneaky cat Violet, our growing flock of breeding quality St Croix hair sheep (and a couple of Great Pyrenees guardians), a small herd of Dexter cows for beef and a colorful variety of heritage laying hens.  We also grow flowers for market.  No pesticides, just pretty!

      Feeding Time

In John 21:16, Jesus, after having asked Peter three times if he loved him, told Peter to feed my sheep. While a bit out context, this verse has been on my mind this week and particularly today, Easter Sunday, as MJ and I have been bottle feeding two lambs rejected by...

Chickens and Guineas and Poop, Oh My

Nothing is so enticing to those of us doing this farm thing as the words, ‘free range’.  Tell the truth, you just sighed a little didn’t you?  That’s because you don’t live with the poop.  Hint for newbies, I have no idea how to fix this problem so feel free to send...

      John Denver Lied

      John Denver Lied

So far nothing about farm life has been laid back.  Like most neophytes we started watching YouTube videos that make everything look really easy.  None of it is really easy!  It’s really entertaining, frustrating, infuriating and thrilling in turns, but never easy. ...
